Namibia not sending troops to DRC – Minister

{Namibia will not send its troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as part of an international military mission to confront Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels in the east of the DRC, Foreign Affairs Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said Wednesday.}

Although she could not give further details, Nandi-Ndaitwah said the Namibian government would not follow Malawi, Tanzania and South Africa which are sending troops as part of the United Nations Forces Intervention Brigade to fight the rebel group in eastern DRC.

South Africa this week announced that it would send 1,000 soldiers to neutralise about 4,000 FDLR rebels in the eastern part of the DRC which has disregarded an international ultimatum to disband by January 2.

The brigade is part of the United Nations Organisation stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO).

“It is a MUNUSCO that is launching the military offensive against the FDLR and South Africa is already part of this,” the minister said.

The spokesperson for the South African Department of International Relations, Clayson Monyela was quoted as saying by the media that: “The FDLR has failed to comply with the dateline. It renders a military option inevitable”.
