A family is mourning the loss of a Minneapolis man who died in Tanzania while volunteering with the Peace Corps.
The Peace Corps this week confirmed the death of 23-year-old Robert “Robbie” Lehman, who died in a traffic crash near the city of Mbeya in Tanzania.
Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet said in a statement that Lehman “dedicated his life to serving others” and “cared deeply for those around him, whether they lived across the street or around the world.”
Lehman was a native of Minneapolis and was serving as a community health volunteer in Tanzania.
Peace Corps officials said Lehman traveled around the United States with his church youth group to help various communities and volunteered at local food pantries, day care centers and thrift shops. In Minnesota, he taught elementary students, volunteered with emergency room patients and mentored local youth.
Lehman was described as a lover of nature and the outdoors, making several trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. He had a bachelor of science from St. Olaf College.
Lehman is survived by his parents, Gregory T. Lehman and Dawn L. Martin, sisters Sarah Lehman and Laura Lehman, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends
