{THE government is expected to make serious decisions on issues of safety and security and lands this week, it has been learnt.}
Home Affairs Minister Charles Kitwanga is today meeting with the Police Forces’ top brass in the city and will later in the day provide a report on the issue of police and ‘fake certificates scam’ that has been circulating in the social media.
The Home Minister told the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam that the reports circulating in the social media were false and that he has directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to furnish him with the correct report.
“I will meet the press after the morning session with the police force’s leadership, where I will provide the correct information,” Mr Kitwanga said. He also underscored the importance of meeting with responsible ministries to figure out a way to control false information from spewing in the social media.
“I will also meet with my counterparts responsible with communications, so we can find a way to address this. It is not right to publish false information. The list contains names of high ranking police officers, who have genuine certificates,” he explained.
In his meeting today with the force’s leadership, discussions will centre on best possible strategy to charter a new plan of action to maximise security and safety in six key areas.
The area include deploying police officers at the Dar es Salaam Port to curb loss of tax revenue, intensify war against illicit drugs, installing surveillance cameras at high-rise buildings, control arbitrary arrests and detention, tackle perennial traffic congestion in the city and providing solutions to challenges facing police officers.
Last week, speaking at a meeting of senior police officers in the city, Mr Kiwanga expressed dismay over the removal of law enforcers at the port, opting for private security companies.
He compared the port to a country’s border, noting that the police cannot be removed from such sensitive areas, which are frequented with fraudulent manipulations. Mr Kitwanga also directed senior police officers to put up a plan to allow installation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in all major buildings to track every individual and their activities to avert crime.
The main monitoring centre will be at the Central Police Station. On drugs, the minister said he would leave no stone unturned to eliminate drug barons in the country, asking law enforcers to stand by and help him as he prepares to crack the whip against drug dealers. He insisted that he will not be cowed by any criminal networks dealing with drugs.
The minister’s pledge was an extension to Dr John Magufuli’s declaration of the war against drug trafficking when inaugurating the 11th Parliament. The Head of State declared war against drug trafficking, especially on drug barons “and not small-time drug peddlers’’.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development, Mr William Lukuvi, is meeting with heads of departments in the ministry today to discuss the Oysterbay Beach development issue, among other land matters.
Mr Lukuvi last week directed officials in his ministry to furnish him with today, on when the project to develop Oysterbay Beach covering the whole seafront from Kenyatta and Ali Hassan Mwinyi roads’ intersection — all the way to Sea Cliff hotel — will begin.
Mr Lukuvi noted that implementation of the project would not involve high-rise buildings, pointing out as President Magufuli had said, that the whole seafront area should remain open and free to the entire Tanzanian public.
In his meeting with the heads of departments from across the country, Mr Lukuvi will also discuss reports that will be provided to him on large chunks of idle land owned by investors.
The heads of departments will also furnish the minister with detailed financial reports since July 2014, which will contain income and expenditures for the last six months — as well as a strategic plan on how the government can help the common man to build good houses, complete with the establishment of a real estate regulatory body.
