Magufuli pleased with big turnout in Uhuru Day duty

{PRESIDENT John Magufuli has expressed delight and appreciation for overwhelming turn up and collective participation by the general public in cleanliness, the exercise meant to be sustainable countrywide.}

Speaking at the Magogoni Fish Market area in the vicinity of the State House in Dar es Salaam yesterday where he joined the people, mostly fishermen, whom Dr Magufuli described as “my good neighbours, the Union president thanked all those who received the call with enthusiasm.

“I would like to express my gratitude to all members of the public who participated in the task of keeping the surroundings clean seriously. This exercise will be sustained as it will help control some of the contagious diseases resulting from filth,” Dr Magufuli said.

While at the Ferry area, Dr Magufuli became a centre of attraction as people could not control their feelings as they saw the Head of State busy leading by example as he got hold of the cleaning equipment present, including a broom and a rake and, and physically participated in the exercise.

Breaking away from the traditional motorcades complete with siren-blaring escort cars usually accompanying top national leaders on their outings, President Magufuli walked to the Magogoni Ferry area.

His security detail faced a daunting task to control people who were anxious to shake hands with the president. On arrival at his destination, which is close to the Eastern Gate of the State House, the public broke into a wild applause, chanting the president’s famous slogan, “Hapa Kazi Tu”, which literally translates as “It is only work that counts here’’.

Business in the Ferry area came to a standstill for some time in the early morning hours as petty traders left whatever they were doing and joined the president to collect garbage around the area.

In the meantime, their customers waited for them to complete the task. The president, in his trademark infectious smile, arrived at the scene in casual wear, including a casual flowery shirt, a wide-brimmed hat and light-soled canvas shoes where he immediately went into action by taking part in the exercise.

The crowd around, seemingly very much impressed, joined him promptly and soon brooms, rakes, slashes and other cleaning equipment were into motion.

Dr Magufuli found time to talk to members of the trading community in the area, including fishermen, fish vendors and hawkers and vendors of various other items, promising to help them in accessing loans to boost their businesses.

He told them to appoint their leaders who would present their problems to him at the State House.

“You should elect leaders who will protect your interests instead of those who will only focus on their own interests,’’ he advised them. Before walking to the Ferry area, the president first took part in cleaning up the area around the State House, accompanied by First Lady Janet and other members of his family.
