Traders under their umbrella body Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) have started a two-day strike in protest of new regulations set by the national tax body Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
According to the new rules, a trader found in possession of merchandise not cleared by URA is prosecuted instead of paying a fine.
KACITA Spokesperson, Issa Sekitto, said they shall not open their shops until URA withdraws a letter that implements what he termed as a harsh policy which is not friendly to traders.
He said they have had a series of meetings with the concerned authorities who have turned a deaf ear to their grievances.
