Kagame urges Africans to take a lead in seeking solutions for own problems

Kagame was speaking in a ‘Peace-building in Africa discussion’ in line with World Economic Forum (WEF) that is taking place in Davos, Switzerland.

The discussion attracted President Alpha Condé of Guinea, Vice President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, Somalia Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khayre, President of World Economic Forum Børge Brende, Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Former USA secretary of state, John Kerry.

On Rwanda’s vision and perspective to peace-building in Africa, Kagame said that there’s no miracle performed.

“We tried to own our problems and we understood that local ownership is very important to us as Rwandans,” he said.

“You cannot import solutions from outside and impose them on people and expect them to work. It cannot. I’m speaking from experience,” he said adding that Rwandans owned own problems and kept mind opened to others.

“But there is absolutely need to own the process,” he said.

The Head of State said that People were telling Rwandans that they needed to divide the country into different states but, however they laughed it off.

“We told them we are having a conversation as Rwandans so who and how are you telling us what to do?,” he said.

Kagame said that Rwanda has seen much progress over the years, adding that “it is still very important to own our challenges, look for real solutions and build our capacity,”

Kagame also attended an Africa Agricultural Transformation Scorecard roundtable discussion that was co-chaired by Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and Bill Gates, founder of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
