Jet dispatched to collect Zuma in Burundi

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) says a jet has been dispatched to Burundi to pick up President Jacob Zuma and he is expected back home this afternoon.

Zuma was stranded in Burundi after his private jet, Inkwazi, experienced technical problems.

The president was in the country to meet other heads of state over peace talks.

As a result, Zuma missed last night’s African National Congress Women’s League gala dinner where he was scheduled to deliver the key note address.

The SANDF’s Siphiwe Dlamini says the president’s safety was not compromised by the technical problem.

“In order to bring the president back, an aircraft was immediately sent to Burundi to ensure that his itinerary continues. It is expected that the president and his entourage will be back home some time during the course of the day.”
