“La d\u00e9cision de nommer Peter Mandelson \u00e9tait une erreur. Il a nui \u00e0 notre parti, \u00e0 notre pays et \u00e0 la confiance dans la politique elle-m\u00eame. Lorsque le Premier ministre a demand\u00e9 mon avis, je lui ai conseill\u00e9 de proc\u00e9der \u00e0 cette nomination, et je prends l’enti\u00e8re responsabilit\u00e9 de ce conseil”, a \u00e9crit M. McSweeney dans une lettre de d\u00e9mission publi\u00e9e par les m\u00e9dias locaux.<\/p>\n

“Dans la vie publique, il faut assumer ses responsabilit\u00e9s quand c’est le plus important, et pas seulement quand c’est le plus commode. Dans ces circonstances, la seule chose honorable \u00e0 faire est de me retirer”, a-t-il ajout\u00e9.<\/p>\n

M. Starmer s’est excus\u00e9 jeudi pour avoir pris la d\u00e9cision de nommer M. Mandelson en tant qu’ambassadeur, apr\u00e8s que de nouvelles r\u00e9v\u00e9lations sur les liens de l’ancien diplomate avec le financier am\u00e9ricain Jeffrey Epstein ont provoqu\u00e9 un scandale politique au Royaume-Uni.<\/p>\n

M. Mandelson, \u00e2g\u00e9 de 72 ans, a occup\u00e9 les fonctions de ministre dans les gouvernements des anciens Premier ministres Tony Blair et Gordon Brown. Il avait \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 ambassadeur \u00e0 Washington d\u00e9but 2025 avant d’\u00eatre cong\u00e9di\u00e9 sept mois plus tard par M. Starmer en raison de l’\u00e9mergence de nouvelles interrogations sur son pass\u00e9. <\/p>\n
