{"id":9751,"date":"2013-08-15T10:15:55","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T10:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/african-union-soldiers-accused-of-gang-rape\/"},"modified":"2013-08-15T10:13:31","modified_gmt":"2013-08-15T10:13:31","slug":"african-union-soldiers-accused-of-gang-rape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/african-union-soldiers-accused-of-gang-rape\/","title":{"rendered":"African Union Soldiers Accused of Gang Rape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The African Union force fighting in Somalia is investigating the alleged gang rape of a woman by its soldiers, a case that has sparked outrage in Mogadishu, the AU said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>A Somali woman has alleged she was abducted, drugged and then repeatedly raped earlier this month by soldiers from both the Somali national army and from AMISOM, the 17,700-strong African Union force that supports the internationally-backed government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;AMISOM is aware of the allegations levelled against its troops,&#8221; the force said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>A joint AMISOM and Somali army team has been set up &#8220;to investigate the matter and appropriate action will be taken once the facts of the case have been established,&#8221; the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>The AU mission &#8220;strongly condemns any incidents of alleged sexual abuse or exploitation&#8221;, it said.<\/p>\n<p>AU troops, include soldiers from five nations &#8212; Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, Sierra Leone and Uganda.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-3408 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/ffg.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The African Union force fighting in Somalia is investigating the alleged gang rape of a woman by its soldiers, a case that has sparked outrage in Mogadishu, the AU said Thursday.
