{"id":9425,"date":"2013-07-31T03:48:48","date_gmt":"2013-07-31T03:48:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/rights-group-slams-conditions-at-taiwan-iphone\/"},"modified":"2013-07-31T03:48:44","modified_gmt":"2013-07-31T03:48:44","slug":"rights-group-slams-conditions-at-taiwan-iphone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/rights-group-slams-conditions-at-taiwan-iphone\/","title":{"rendered":"Rights group slams conditions at Taiwan iPhone factory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{{A labor rights group Monday accused a Chinese company that makes iPhones for Apple Inc. of abuses including withholding employees\u2019 pay and excessive working hours.}}<\/p>\n<p>China Labor Watch said it found violations of the law and of Apple\u2019s pledges about working conditions at factories operated by Pegatron Corp., a Taiwanese company.<\/p>\n<p>Conditions in Chinese factories that produce iPhones and other popular Apple products have been under scrutiny following complaints about labor and environmental violations by a different supplier, Taiwan\u2019s Foxconn, a unit of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.<\/p>\n<p>Apple said in a statement it was \u201ccommitted to providing safe and fair working conditions\u201d and would investigate the claims about Pegatron. The Taiwanese company\u2019s chief executive, in a separate statement, also promised to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>China Labor Watch said its investigation covered two factories in Shanghai and one in Suzhou, a nearby city, that employ a total of 70,000 people. It found violations including discrimination against ethnic minorities and women, excessive work hours, poor living conditions, health and safety problems and pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Pegatron assembles products including the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 for Apple, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Apple said it confirmed one accusation by China Labor Watch \u2013 that identity cards of some workers were being held by management \u2013 and told Pegatron to stop.<\/p>\n<p>Apple has published a code of conduct for its suppliers and joined the Fair Labor Association, a worker rights monitoring group.
