{"id":902,"date":"2011-09-29T03:29:25","date_gmt":"2011-09-29T03:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/south-sudan-finally-available-on-google-maps\/"},"modified":"2011-09-29T03:32:25","modified_gmt":"2011-09-29T03:32:25","slug":"south-sudan-finally-available-on-google-maps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/south-sudan-finally-available-on-google-maps\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudan Finally Available On Google Maps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{{Google has updated its maps to include the newly independent nation of South Sudan.}}<\/p>\n<p>The move follows a campaign by a South Sudanese journalist, who posted an online petition calling for the new nation to be marked on web maps.<\/p>\n<p>The absence of South Sudan on Google Maps, and the majority of Internet maps, has frustrated citizens of the new country.<\/p>\n<p> As early as July 14, Google answered questions about the missing border with assurances that it was in the process of making the update.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-755 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/john_tanza_mabusu.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s nice,\u201d John Tanza Mabusu(photo above), a broadcast journalist who fled Sudan in 1991 and now lives in Washington, D.C, said that 47 days after South Sudan became a country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I would still argue that it\u2019s too late to start talking about that because since the 9th of July, if they were serious, we would have seen the signs of their work.\u201d<br \/>\nMabusu started a Change.org petition urging Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and National Geographic to update their maps.<\/p>\n<p>The petition collected more than 1,600 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Google is the first of those companies to update its maps.<\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople from Yahoo and Mapquest have pointed to map data providers such as NAVTEQ, which has said that it is \u201ccurrently assessing plans\u201d and cited time-consuming detailed planning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m hoping that now that Google has officially recognized South Sudan on their maps, the other major online mapping services will quickly follow suit,\u201d Mabusu said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>He added. \u201cThe people of South Sudan fought long and hard for their independence and suffered greatly.
