Ivory Coast’s state broadcaster said that Fidele Sarassoro was unhurt in the attack, which happened in a northern area of the West African country.<\/p>\n
Sarassoro heads a national commission to disarm rebels who battled for years for control of the country following an attempted coup against ex-president Larent Gbagbo in 2002.<\/p>\n
The attack came as the current president, Alassane Ouattara, prepared to visit the region, which was under rebel control from 2002 to 2010.<\/p>\n
Gbagbo’s refusal to cede office after losing the November 2010 election to Ouattara sparked five months of violence that killed at least 3,000 people.<\/p>\n
