{"id":8710,"date":"2013-06-26T14:45:26","date_gmt":"2013-06-26T14:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/african-states-join-forces-to-tackle-rising-gulf\/"},"modified":"2013-06-26T14:46:44","modified_gmt":"2013-06-26T14:46:44","slug":"african-states-join-forces-to-tackle-rising-gulf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/african-states-join-forces-to-tackle-rising-gulf\/","title":{"rendered":"African states join forces to tackle rising Gulf of Guinea piracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{{West and central African nations have agreed to create a regional centre for coordinating the fight against a sharp rise in piracy in the Gulf of Guinea that is jeopardising the shipping of commodities in the region.}}<\/p>\n<p>The Gulf of Guinea, which includes Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast, is a major source of oil and cocoa and increasingly metals for world markets.<\/p>\n<p>Pirate attacks in the region, mainly carried out by armed Nigerian gangs, have almost doubled from last year, jacking up insurance costs.<\/p>\n<p>The main purpose of the new centre, to be based in Cameroon, will be intelligence gathering and research, according to an agreement signed at a summit of regional leaders in the Cameroonian capital Yaounde.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No country can withstand the growing challenges individually.
