{"id":8310,"date":"2013-06-07T04:24:15","date_gmt":"2013-06-07T04:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/senegal-to-recruit-10-000-police-officers\/"},"modified":"2013-06-07T04:24:12","modified_gmt":"2013-06-07T04:24:12","slug":"senegal-to-recruit-10-000-police-officers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/senegal-to-recruit-10-000-police-officers\/","title":{"rendered":"Senegal to Recruit 10,000 Police Officers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senegal plans to recruit an additional 10,000 police officers to \u201cintensify national security in anticipation and prevention\u201d of potential infiltrators.<\/p>\n<p>Interior minister Path\u00e9 Seck told legislators Wednesday terror attacks were rife, hence the massive recruitment.<\/p>\n<p>He assured the lawmakers that there was maximum security along the land borders, including with the Islamist infested Mali.<\/p>\n<p>The latest strategy, said General Seck, includes a permanent presence of security operatives to \u201cprotect particularly zones, persons and properties\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Islamists in the Sahel have vowed to carry out reprisals in countries, including Senegal, which have deployed troops to help the international force flush out extremists in northern Mali.<\/p>\n<p>Senegal\u2019s Foreign ministry had also issued a statement assuring security, especially within the tourism sector, which is the country\u2019s main income earner.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Affairs minister Mankeur Ndiaye had admitted that a jihadists reprisal could be possible in Senegal because of some \u201cdormant\u201d terror networks in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts identified some of the \u201cdormant\u201d terror networks as belonging to the several Islamic fraternities in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ndiaye\u2019s statement has heightened fear of imminent terrorist reprisal attacks on Senegal since the country deployed its troops to northern Mali.<\/p>\n<p>It is ostensibly in a bid to forestall such reprisal attacks that the Interior ministry launched a massive mopping up campaign.<\/p>\n<p>During that operation, Mr Ndiaye said, about 70,000 people were arrested and interrogated, while 12,750 were detained.<\/p>\n<p>He said hundreds armed gangs and banditry groups had been dismantled across the country.<\/p>\n<p>NMG<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senegal plans to recruit an additional 10,000 police officers to \u201cintensify national security in anticipation and prevention\u201d of potential infiltrators.
