{"id":81,"date":"2011-04-28T10:12:25","date_gmt":"2011-04-28T10:12:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/rwanda-becomes-first-african-country-to-provide\/"},"modified":"2011-04-28T10:12:08","modified_gmt":"2011-04-28T10:12:08","slug":"rwanda-becomes-first-african-country-to-provide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/rwanda-becomes-first-african-country-to-provide\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda becomes first African country to provide free cervical cancer vaccination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Rwandan girls aged 12 to 15 years have become the first in Africa to receive free vaccination against cervical cancer, while older women aged 35 to 45 will be screened and treated for the same. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The initial three year&nbsp;comprehensive integrated cervical cancer prevention <span data-scaytid=\"72\" data-scayt_word=\"programme\">programme<\/span>&nbsp;will be facilitated by MERCK, a research institute, which came up with the vaccine. the institute will work closely with <span data-scaytid=\"96\" data-scayt_word=\"QIAGEN\">QIAGEN<\/span> staff who will conduct screening services in order to offer treatment among those affected.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking shortly after launching the campaign at <span data-scaytid=\"3\" data-scayt_word=\"Kanyinya\">Kanyinya<\/span> Primary School in <span data-scaytid=\"4\" data-scayt_word=\"Nyarugenge\">Nyarugenge<\/span> District, the First Lady, Jeannette <span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"Kagame\">Kagame<\/span>, noted that Rwanda was proud to be the first African country to roll out free Human <span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"Papilloma\">Papilloma<\/span> Virus (<span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"HPV\">HPV<\/span>) Vaccination for girls and screening for women. This is unlike other African countries where the vaccine is unaffordable to the majority due to high costs.<\/p>\n<p>She further advised that in order for children to <span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"maintan\">maintan<\/span> a high immune system, it was necessary for them to be <span data-scaytid=\"13\" data-scayt_word=\"immunised\">immunised<\/span> three times within a period of six months. Parents and teachers were also encouraged to report any cases of side effects the children might develop. The effects include mild headache, nausea and skin rash.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reacting on the issue, Agnes <span data-scaytid=\"14\" data-scayt_word=\"Binagwaho\">Binagwaho<\/span> the permanent secretary in the ministry of health commended the initiative adding that it was helpful since out of the 2.72 million women aged 15 years and older are at a risk of developing cervical cancer<\/p>\n<p>Mark Feinberg, the Chief Public Health and Science Officer at Merck Vaccines highlighted that his institution would donate more than 2 million doses of <span data-scaytid=\"15\" data-scayt_word=\"GARDASIL\">GARDASIL<\/span> (vaccine) while <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"QIAGEN\">QIAGEN<\/span> would provide 250,000 Human <span data-scaytid=\"16\" data-scayt_word=\"Papillomavirus\">Papillomavirus<\/span> Vaccination (<span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"HPV\">HPV<\/span>) screening tests at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>Over 80 percent of cervical cancer cases occur in the world\u2019s poorest countries, having a severe impact on the women affected, their families and communities. The program is expected to&nbsp;provide access to a comprehensive cervical cancer prevention to help reduce the burden of disease and improve public health outcomes and capacity in the country.<\/p>\n<p>If treated earlier, the cervical cancer can be completely cured, hence the need for earlier prevention.. The vaccine is appropriate for girls who are still virgins since the virus is passed through sexual intercourse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Most cervical cancer is caused by a virus called&nbsp;[human <span data-scaytid=\"17\" data-scayt_word=\"papillomavirus\">papillomavirus<\/span>->http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/hw-popup\/human-papillomavirus-hpv], or&nbsp;[<span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"HPV\">HPV<\/span>->http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sexual-conditions\/HPV-Genital-Warts\/]. Scientists have identified several types of the <span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"HPV\">HPV<\/span> virus though not all can cause cervical cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Some of them cause&nbsp;[genital warts->http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/hw-popup\/genital-warts-8035], but other types may not cause any symptoms. However the most common signs include bleeding when something comes in contact with the cervix. This leads to pain during sex which is a common feeling that later develops to [vaginal discharge->http:\/\/women.webmd.com\/vaginal-discharge-whats-abnormal] tinged with&nbsp;[blood->http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/heart\/anatomy-picture-of-blood].<\/p>\n<p>An infected person can have <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"HPV\">HPV<\/span> for years and not know it. It stays in your body and can lead to cervical cancer years after you were infected. This is why it is important for Rwandans to have regular&nbsp;[Pap->http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/lung\/pulmonary-alveolar-proteinosis]&nbsp;tests. A Pap test can find changes in cervical cells before they turn into cancer.
