{"id":7761,"date":"2013-05-12T04:22:20","date_gmt":"2013-05-12T04:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/anger-at-good-catholics-use-condoms-slogan\/"},"modified":"2013-05-12T04:21:41","modified_gmt":"2013-05-12T04:21:41","slug":"anger-at-good-catholics-use-condoms-slogan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/anger-at-good-catholics-use-condoms-slogan\/","title":{"rendered":"Anger at \u201cGood Catholics Use Condoms\u201d Slogan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{{A war of words has erupted between the Catholic Bishops in Kenya and a congregation calling itself Catholics for Choice (CFC).}}<\/p>\n<p>When the Catholic Church Kenya Episcopal Conference condemned the message \u201cGood Catholics Use Condoms\u201d propagated by the US-based CFC, a number of Kenyans Catholics and non-Catholics expressed mixed reactions on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>A choirmaster at St Andrews Catholic Church in Bondo, Nichodemus Omondi, argued it was inappropriate to generalise that all Catholics partook of a specific notion that had nothing to do with an individual\u2019s spiritual growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe message from CFC is contextually misleading because when they say \u2018Good Catholics Use Condoms\u2019 who are the good Catholics or do they mean there are bad Catholics? What kind of message are they sending to Catholics and non-Catholics who don\u2019t embrace condoms but still lead happy lives?\u201d argued Mr Omondi.<\/p>\n<p>However, in a rejoinder, CFC released a statement challenging the Catholic bishops\u2019 integrity. In a press release titled \u201cSix Questions for the Kenyan Bishops,\u201d the statement reads in part, \u201cCatholics are the most supportive of the use of condoms for contraception and preventing sexually transmitted diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Mombasa Archbishop Boniface Lele said, \u201cWith some counseling \u2014 and this is something we don\u2019t tell everyone \u2014 you can ask couples to use condoms, so that the rate of reinfection goes down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCameroon\u2019s Cardinal Christian Tumi supports the use of condoms to prevent the transmission of HIV between married couples, saying, \u201cIf a partner in a marriage is infected with HIV, the use of condoms makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement further states the Kenyan bishops, and other bishops\u2019 conferences around the world receive millions of dollars to provide care to people living with HIV and Aids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stance by the Kenyan bishops highlights their refusal to provide condoms to the many international development agencies that send money their way to help in the fight against the spread of HIV\u201d, CFC wrote.<\/p>\n<p>{wirestory}<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{{A war of words has erupted between the Catholic Bishops in Kenya and a congregation calling itself Catholics for Choice (CFC).}} When the Catholic Church Kenya Episcopal Conference condemned the message \u201cGood Catholics Use Condoms\u201d propagated by the US-based CFC, a number of Kenyans Catholics and non-Catholics expressed mixed reactions on the issue.
