{"id":7702,"date":"2013-05-08T08:19:03","date_gmt":"2013-05-08T08:19:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/munyenyezi-sentencing-to-delay-over-boston\/"},"modified":"2013-05-08T08:18:11","modified_gmt":"2013-05-08T08:18:11","slug":"munyenyezi-sentencing-to-delay-over-boston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/munyenyezi-sentencing-to-delay-over-boston\/","title":{"rendered":"Munyenyezi Sentencing to Delay over Boston Bombing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{{U.S. Federal prosecutors have asked to delay sentencing of Rwandan genocide suspect Beatrice Munyenyezi because the Boston-based attorneys have been heavily involved in the response to last month\u2019s Boston Marathon bombings.}}<\/p>\n<p>However, Munyenyezi\u2019s lawyers argue that Prosecutors \u2018shouldn\u2019t have to wait\u2019.<br \/>\nThe suspect who lives in Manchester was convicted in February of lying on U.S. immigration forms about her role in Rwanda\u2019s 1994 genocide.<\/p>\n<p>Her lawyers said, Munyenyezi has already been incarcerated four times longer than the maximum period allowed under 2003 sentencing guidelines, the ones in place when she is accused of lying about her past in Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very sympathetic to the resources the marathon bombings is taking,\u201d attorney Mark Howard said. \u201cBut we have a client\u2019s interests to protect. And I don\u2019t think anyone would want to sit in jail and wait just because the government is busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Munyenyezi was convicted of immigration fraud during a two-week trial in February, a proceeding held only after a first one in her case ended in a mistrial in March 2012. <\/p>\n<p>During the second trial, prosecutors called nearly a dozen Rwandan witnesses to the stand, with each connecting Munyenyezi to the violence in some way.<\/p>\n<p>Several placed her at a roadblock outside the hotel owned by her husband\u2019s family where prosecutors say Munyenyezi checked identification cards and separated ethnic Tutsis, who would be killed or raped. Other witnesses described seeing Munyenyezi wear the colorful clothing of the MRND party, which organized the Genocide.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors called it evidence that Munyenyezi had lied when she told immigration officials she wasn\u2019t politically affiliated.<\/p>\n<p>The jury convicted Munyenyezi after about four hours of deliberation.
