{"id":55871,"date":"2025-10-07T13:53:21","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T13:53:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/peruvian-bishop-resigns-after-17-secret-lovers-spark-church-scandal\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T12:43:53","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T12:43:53","slug":"peruvian-bishop-resigns-after-17-secret-lovers-spark-church-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/peruvian-bishop-resigns-after-17-secret-lovers-spark-church-scandal\/","title":{"rendered":"Peruvian bishop resigns after 17 secret lovers spark church scandal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ciro Quispe L\u00f3pez, 51, the bishop of Juli, stepped down following an investigation that revealed some of his alleged lovers had nearly come to blows upon discovering each other\u2019s involvement.<\/p>\n<p>Paola Ugaz, a Peruvian journalist, described the situation as \u201ca real soap opera\u201d in an interview with The Times. <\/p>\n<p>She explained that a nun who was one of L\u00f3pez\u2019s lovers became jealous of a lawyer he was also seeing, sending information about the bishop\u2019s affairs to a third woman, which resulted in a physical confrontation. Ugaz added that many of the 17 women were too frightened to come forward due to fear of L\u00f3pez.<\/p>\n<p>The scandal came to light after L\u00f3pez reportedly sent photos and videos intended for his mistresses to his cleaning lady, who filed a complaint with the Catholic Church. The Vatican subsequently reviewed voice notes, photos, and videos linked to the bishop.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3pez has denied the allegations, claiming they are part of a defamation campaign orchestrated by \u201cdark hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the sexual misconduct allegations, L\u00f3pez was reportedly under investigation for embezzling church funds.
