{"id":55389,"date":"2025-08-27T17:26:53","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T17:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/rwanda-and-mozambique-strengthen-ties-with-agreements-on-security-and-trade\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T09:47:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T09:47:15","slug":"rwanda-and-mozambique-strengthen-ties-with-agreements-on-security-and-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/rwanda-and-mozambique-strengthen-ties-with-agreements-on-security-and-trade\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda and Mozambique strengthen ties with agreements on security and trade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The agreements, formalised during a visit by Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo, reflect a shared commitment to tackling terrorism and fostering economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>The first agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and Mozambique\u2019s Investment and Export Promotion Agency (APIEX), was signed by RDB Chief Executive Officer Jean-Guy Afrika and Mozambique\u2019s High Commissioner to Rwanda, Amade Miquidade. <\/p>\n<p>The MoU aims to expand trade and investment in sectors like agriculture, tourism, and industry, building on prior frameworks to drive economic collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>A second pact, a renewed Status of the Forces Agreement on the Support to Fight Terrorism in Mozambique, was signed by Rwanda\u2019s Minister of Defence, Juvenal Marizamunda, and Mozambique\u2019s Minister of National Defence, Crist\u00f3v\u00e3o Artur Chume. <\/p>\n<p>The agreement extends Rwanda\u2019s military support in Mozambique\u2019s Cabo Delgado province, where Rwandan forces have been deployed since 2021 to combat Islamist insurgents. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to this cooperation, we can see peace returning to the region,\u201d President Chapo said, acknowledging Rwanda\u2019s role in stabilising Cabo Delgado despite ongoing sporadic attacks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-93307 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/gzyk7v3a4aq5tli.jpg\" alt=\"A renewed Status of the Forces Agreement on the Support to Fight Terrorism in Mozambique, was signed by Rwanda\u2019s Minister of Defence, Juvenal Marizamunda, and Mozambique\u2019s Minister of National Defence, Crist\u00f3v\u00e3o Artur Chume. \" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking at the ceremony, President Paul Kagame emphasised the need for African-led solutions to regional challenges, stating, \u201cOutsourcing the responsibility to external actors will not build lasting peace nor development.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He highlighted the agreements as a step toward operationalising existing frameworks, noting that Rwanda and Mozambique share \u201cvery strong bilateral ties\u201d and a bond as \u201cbrothers and sisters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Chapo, making his first visit to Rwanda as Mozambique\u2019s leader, praised the warm welcome in Kigali and the \u201cexcellent bilateral conversations\u201d that underscored mutual solidarity. <\/p>\n<p>He invited President Kagame to visit Mozambique and thanked Rwanda for its support in combating terrorism, paying homage to Rwandan forces working alongside Mozambican troops.<\/p>\n<p>Both leaders expressed confidence in the partnership\u2019s future. \u201cWe are on the right path to growing an already excellent partnership,\u201d Kagame said. <\/p>\n<p>Chapo echoed this optimism, noting that the agreements would strengthen relations between the two nations and their peoples. <\/p>\n<p>On the second and final day of his visit, Thursday, August 28, President Chapo will meet with Rwandan business leaders interested in exploring investment opportunities in Mozambique.
