{"id":54746,"date":"2025-07-03T09:35:22","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T09:35:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/rwanda-to-host-world-kiswahili-day-celebrations\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T10:47:06","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T10:47:06","slug":"rwanda-to-host-world-kiswahili-day-celebrations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/rwanda-to-host-world-kiswahili-day-celebrations\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda to host World Kiswahili Day celebrations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The two-day event marks the fourth global observance of the day and is expected to spotlight Kiswahili\u2019s growing role in regional integration, education, diplomacy, and economic development.<\/p>\n<p>Organised under the theme \u201cKiswahili, Inclusive Education and Sustainable Development,\u201d the celebrations are recognised by UNESCO and are being held in partnership with the East African Community (EAC) and the Government of Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>In a joint statement released Tuesday, the organisers said the event will serve as a platform to reaffirm Kiswahili\u2019s importance in shaping Africa\u2019s unity, identity, and development trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s celebration aims to reaffirm Kiswahili\u2019s pivotal role in fostering regional integration, cultural identity, and socio-economic development across the continent,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>The programme will feature a mix of cultural showcases \u2014 including music, poetry, and visual art performed in Kiswahili \u2014 as well as academic dialogues and expert panel discussions on the language\u2019s application in education, technology, media, and public policy.<\/p>\n<p>The East African Kiswahili Commission, headquartered in Zanzibar, is leading efforts to standardise and promote the language across the region. Established under Article 137 (2) of the EAC Treaty, the commission provides support through research, curriculum development, terminology coordination, and policy guidance.<\/p>\n<p>According to the organisers, Kiswahili\u2019s significance goes far beyond the classroom. The language is increasingly seen as a strategic tool for strengthening political ties and facilitating cross-border communication among EAC member states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also vital for effective diplomacy, enabling clearer communication and building stronger political relationships,\u201d the statement noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEconomically, emphasising Kiswahili in business transactions across the African Free Trade Area enhances trade efficiency and opportunities, boosting economic growth and creating job opportunities across various sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Kigali gathering is expected to draw a diverse range of stakeholders, including policymakers, educators, linguists, artists, and civil society representatives, all united in celebrating Kiswahili\u2019s role as a language of daily life and intercultural exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Kiswahili is spoken by more than 200 million people across Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa. It serves as a working language of both the African Union and the East African Community, and its influence continues to expand.<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda officially adopted Kiswahili as one of its four national languages in 2017, alongside Kinyarwanda, English, and French.
