{"id":53915,"date":"2025-04-17T09:36:16","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T09:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/over-690-residents-relocated-from-high-risk-zones-in-kigali\/"},"modified":"2025-04-17T09:35:05","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T09:35:05","slug":"over-690-residents-relocated-from-high-risk-zones-in-kigali","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/over-690-residents-relocated-from-high-risk-zones-in-kigali\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 690 residents relocated from high-risk zones in Kigali"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Emma Claudine Ntirenganya, Director General in charge of Communication and Education at the City of Kigali, made the disclosure during an interview on the Ignite Show.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that the relocation was prompted by warnings from Meteo Rwanda, which indicated that rainfall is likely to increase, posing further risk to lives and property.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, Kigali was hit by continuous rain for nearly two days, resulting in significant damage and the loss of two lives. This situation pushed city authorities to take urgent action to move residents away from dangerous areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Nyarugenge District, 385 people have been relocated, most of them from Kigali Sector, with a few others from Gitega, Nyamirambo, and Mageragere,\u201d Ntirenganya said. \u201cIn Gasabo District, we had the largest number to relocate \u2014 residents from 10 different sectors \u2014 totaling 505 households. So far, 312 people have already moved, and the relocation continues today. In Kicukiro, 35 people were supposed to be relocated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that the targeted residents include families living in severely risky conditions \u2014 such as homes already damaged by rain, houses located below water-absorbing slopes, people living near cracked buildings, and those whose compounds are structurally unsafe and could collapse with further rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Ministry in charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA), 191 people died due to disasters across the country in 2024.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-85840\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/umujyi_wa_kigali_watangaje_ko_abatuye_mu_manegeka_batangiye_kwimurwa_harindwa_ko_bahitanwa_n_im.jpg\" alt=\"The City of Kigali has begun relocating residents from high-risk zones\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Kigali has begun relocating residents from high-risk zones, particularly those affected by recent heavy rainfall.
