{"id":53422,"date":"2025-03-17T07:46:57","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T07:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/uganda-extradites-rwanda-fugitive-accused-of-torturing-burundian-student\/"},"modified":"2025-03-17T07:46:45","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T07:46:45","slug":"uganda-extradites-rwanda-fugitive-accused-of-torturing-burundian-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/uganda-extradites-rwanda-fugitive-accused-of-torturing-burundian-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Uganda extradites Rwanda fugitive accused of torturing Burundian student"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cToday, Rwanda received Gitangaza Prince, who had fled to Uganda after his involvement in the crime of torture committed against Haberumugabo Guy Divin in November 2024,\u201d the Rwanda Investigation Bureau announced.<\/p>\n<p>His extradition follows an international arrest warrant issued by Rwanda\u2019s National Public Prosecution Authority under the Uganda-Rwanda mutual legal assistance framework.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Rwandan government, the attack on Haberumugabo stemmed from a theft accusation.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred in Akindege Cell, Kamashashi Village, Kicukiro District, in which Gitangaza, together with a group of fellow young people, severely tortured Haberumugabo.<\/p>\n<p>Haberumugabo was accused of stealing three mobile phones and a laptop. Following the assault, Rwandan authorities arrested 10 people in connection to the attack.<\/p>\n<p>The suspects include Adolph Uwase Emmanuel (24), Bruce Ikuzwe Emery (21), Kevin Imanzi (21), Vanessa Kirezi (20), Joel Nkubana (20), Jonathan Mugenzi (20), Kevin Kirenga (19), and Marembo Rugema (19).<\/p>\n<p>Officials from Uganda and Rwanda oversaw the handover of Gitangaza to Rwanda at the Kagitumba One Stop Border Post on Saturday March 17, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda\u2019s delegation was led by Jean Bosco Zingiro, I-24\/7 Communication Specialist at INTERPOL National Central Bureau, Kigali, while Uganda\u2019s delegation was headed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Otekat Andrew Mike, representing Uganda Police.<\/p>\n<p>The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) said that all eight other accomplices linked to the crime are currently under provisional detention pending a court hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRIB warns criminal suspects who flee judicial process to other countries that there is strong collaboration to bring them to justice and they will not find a safe haven abroad,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-83727 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/pic-70.jpg\" alt=\"RIB officials received Gitangaza at the Kagitumba One Stop Border Post on Saturday March 17, 2025.\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Uganda has extradited a fugitive wanted in Rwanda on torture charges.
