{"id":5327,"date":"2013-01-21T23:19:27","date_gmt":"2013-01-21T23:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/eritrea-troops-surround-mutineers-in-asmara\/"},"modified":"2013-01-21T23:19:14","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T23:19:14","slug":"eritrea-troops-surround-mutineers-in-asmara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/eritrea-troops-surround-mutineers-in-asmara\/","title":{"rendered":"Eritrea Troops Surround Mutineers in Asmara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{{Eritrean army tanks besieged the information ministry in central Asmara on Monday after some 200 mutineers seized the building to call for political reform, diplomatic and diaspora sources said today.}}<\/p>\n<p>No shots had been fired and the rest of the city appeared calm, the diplomats added, although very few details were immediately available.<\/p>\n<p>Amanuel Ghirmai, an Eritrean journalist in Paris for the opposition Radio Erena, said that around 100 army mutineers stormed the hill-top ministry \u2014 which towers over the capital of the Red Sea state \u2014 early on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>They reportedly ordered news readers at the government-run television and radio station \u2014 the only source of media for the authoritarian state \u2014 to read a statement that they will implement the country\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n<p>The statement also reportedly ordered the release of prisoners of conscience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not know who is leading the situation&#8230; everybody has been put into the same room (in the ministry),\u201d he said, adding that he had spoken to sources in Asmara.<\/p>\n<p>The reports were not possible to confirm independently.<\/p>\n<p>However, Eritrean expatriates who had spoken to compatriots in Asmara said they could confirm reports that troops had been deployed at the information ministry, and that state television Eri-TV had stopped broadcasting, they told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>All Eritrea\u2019s public media are recorded and broadcast from the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe local transmission has been cut, the only satellite signal is airing some archives,\u201d Amanuel added.<\/p>\n<p>Eritrean President Isaias Afeworki has ruled the Horn of Africa nation with an iron grip from independence in 1993, following an epic 30-year liberation war from neighbouring Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p>NMG<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{{Eritrean army tanks besieged the information ministry in central Asmara on Monday after some 200 mutineers seized the building to call for political reform, diplomatic and diaspora sources said today.}} No shots had been fired and the rest of the city appeared calm, the diplomats added, although very few details were immediately available.
