{"id":53230,"date":"2025-03-04T07:11:40","date_gmt":"2025-03-04T07:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/uganda-deploys-more-troops-in-northeastern-drc\/"},"modified":"2025-03-04T07:11:33","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T07:11:33","slug":"uganda-deploys-more-troops-in-northeastern-drc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/uganda-deploys-more-troops-in-northeastern-drc\/","title":{"rendered":"Uganda deploys more troops in northeastern DRC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cOur troops have entered Mahagi town, and we are in control,\u201d Defense and Military Affairs spokesperson Felix Kulayigye told AFP Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The deployment was requested by the Congolese army following alleged massacres of civilians carried out by a militia known as the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO), he said, without providing further details.<\/p>\n<p>Mahagi is in Ituri province, which borders Uganda, where at least 51 people were killed on February 10, 2025 by armed men affiliated with CODECO, according to humanitarian and local sources.<\/p>\n<p>CODECO claims it defends the interests of the Lendu community, mainly composed of farmers, against the Hema community, who are mainly herders.<\/p>\n<p>Uganda already has thousands of troops in other parts of Ituri under an agreement with the Congolese government.
