We are the people\u2019s army,&#8221; Lt. Col. Ngoma said on Sunday, February 16, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Lt. Col. Ngoma hinted at the \u201cliberation\u201d of Bukavu after many M23 fighters were seen entering the city in the early hours of Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>This followed an announcement from the office of the President of the DRC, stating that the country\u2019s army and local militias were in control of Bukavu.<\/p>\n<p>M23 fighters were seen at the intersections of roads, at a place known as \u2018Place de L\u2019Independance,\u2019 and in an area called \u2018La Botte,\u2019 where the South Kivu Governor&#8217;s office is located, on the shores of Lake Kivu.<\/p>\n<p>They were also seen entering other parts of Bukavu, including Kadutu, signalling that the DRC government forces, who had retreated from the city, might have left again.<\/p>\n<p>M23 fighters suggested they had taken Bukavu after capturing Kavumu Airport, which they said was used by the DRC\u2019s coalition forces to launch attacks on M23 positions.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-81741 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/bukavu.jpg\" alt=\"M23 fighters were seen at the intersections of roads, at a place known as \u2018Place de L\u2019Independance,\u2019 and in an area called \u2018La Botte,\u2019 where the South Kivu Governor&#039;s office is located, on the shores of Lake Kivu.\" \/><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-81740 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/buk-5-62c46.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The spokesperson for the M23 rebel group, Lt.
