\u201cI told President Tshisekedi multiple times, \u2018The only way to end this conflict is through dialogue,\u2019\u201d Louren\u00e7o said in an interview with Jeune Afrique following the capture of Goma by the M23 rebels. \u201cBut each time, my advice was met with resistance.\u201d <\/p>\n

Louren\u00e7o warned that the conflict in eastern DRC risks spreading across the region without dialogue to address M23 grievances on, among others, persecution and marginalisation of Congolese Rwandophones.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot allow this war to escalate further. Every effort must be made to stop it,\u201d he emphasized. <\/p>\n

Reflecting on Angola\u2019s own history, Louren\u00e7o drew parallels between the DRC crisis and Angola\u2019s past conflicts. <\/p>\n

\u201cEven when we faced aggression, we sat down with our enemies. We negotiated with South Africa\u2019s apartheid-era military and reached the 1988 New York Agreement,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe also engaged in talks with UNITA to bring peace to Angola. Why should the DRC be any different?\u201d <\/p>\n

According to Louren\u00e7o, the December ministerial meeting between Rwanda and the DRC had made significant progress, with Rwanda agreeing to lift defensive measures and the DRC committing to dismantling the FDLR. However, he stressed that further steps were still needed. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe must build on that progress and work toward a peace agreement signed by both leaders,\u201d he urged. <\/p>\n

As he prepares to assume the chairmanship of the African Union, Louren\u00e7o reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the crisis, stating that appointing a mediator for the Rwanda-DRC conflict would be a priority. <\/p>\n

\u201cTshisekedi must understand that there is no other way,\u201d Louren\u00e7o concluded. \u201cIf we truly want peace, we must be willing to talk.\u201d <\/p>\n
