{"id":5060,"date":"2013-01-08T02:49:16","date_gmt":"2013-01-08T02:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/deported-rwandan-priest-returns-to-zambia\/"},"modified":"2013-01-08T02:49:58","modified_gmt":"2013-01-08T02:49:58","slug":"deported-rwandan-priest-returns-to-zambia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/deported-rwandan-priest-returns-to-zambia\/","title":{"rendered":"Deported Rwandan Priest Returns to Zambia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{{A Rwandan Catholic priest, Father Viateur Banyangandora who was deported from Zambia has reportedly returned to the southern African nation.}}<\/p>\n<p>Zambian authorities in November revoked the deportation of Fr Banyangandora after \u201cextensive consultations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Fr Banyangadora was received at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Monday by senior Catholic leaders from Eastern Province, where he was based before deportation.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Fr Banyangadora nor Catholic officials addressed journalists at the airport.<\/p>\n<p>The deportation of the Father Banyangandora in August last year angered Catholics who exerted consistent pressure on government to revoke the order.<\/p>\n<p>His deportation was shrouded in a reason which was not clearly explained apart from Home Affairs minister Edgar Lungu saying he was \u201cpreaching messages likely to incite people to rise against the government\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was seen as a move by President Michael Sata\u2019s regime to gag dissent.<\/p>\n<p>The Catholic Church is seen to be \u201csympathetic\u201d to President Sata\u2019s regime, a first Catholic to be leader of a predominantly Christian nation.<\/p>\n<p>Father Banyangandora who was based in eastern Zambia&#8217;s Lundazi district was deported after he criticised the government over the handling of the prices of cotton and the growing inequality in the southern African nation during a church service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{{A Rwandan Catholic priest, Father Viateur Banyangandora who was deported from Zambia has reportedly returned to the southern African nation.}} Zambian authorities in November revoked the deportation of Fr Banyangandora after \u201cextensive consultations\u201d.
