{"id":50122,"date":"2024-03-01T05:37:43","date_gmt":"2024-03-01T05:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/belgium-s-prime-minister-rejects-drc-s-request-for-sanctions-against-rwanda\/"},"modified":"2024-03-04T17:14:11","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T17:14:11","slug":"belgium-s-prime-minister-rejects-drc-s-request-for-sanctions-against-rwanda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/belgium-s-prime-minister-rejects-drc-s-request-for-sanctions-against-rwanda\/","title":{"rendered":"Belgium&#8217;s Prime Minister rejects DRC&#8217;s request for sanctions against Rwanda amid M23 accusations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tshisekedi arrived in Belgium on February 28, 2024, from Luanda, Angola, where he had discussions with his counterpart, Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o, about the ongoing conflict in North Kivu Province.<\/p>\n<p>After being received by De Croo, when journalists asked him about his request to Belgium, he responded, \u201cWhat I would ask for Rwanda is sanctions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Croo indicated that imposing sanctions on Rwanda was not feasible, explaining that there were ongoing discussions within this bloc to sanction individuals directly involved with M23.<\/p>\n<p>The Belgian Prime Minister highlighted that while Tshisekedi accuses Rwanda of supporting M23, the DRC government also supports armed groups, and that the priority should be to stop the fighting.<\/p>\n<p>He stated, \u201cThe DRC must stop supporting other armed groups. The most important thing right now is that the fighting stops. The conflict has lasted too long and has had significant consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DRC government has been trying to pressure the EU to side with it, leveraging its relationship with Belgium, which currently leads the organization.
