Zambia\u2019s Finance minister Alexander Chikwanda launched the new Kwacha notes assuring the citizens that the move to rebase currency was meant to address previous bouts of depreciation.<\/p>\n
What was 1,000 kwacha will now be one kwacha.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe rebasing of the Kwacha was aimed at addressing the inflationary spirals which over the years caused the currency to depreciate to intolerable levels which were not cost neutral in terms of the economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Zambia, Africa\u2019s largest producer of copper, has in the past years seen inflation take a downward trend.<\/p>\n
In 2009 inflation stood at 9.9 percent, higher than the 7.2 rate seen in 2011.<\/p>\n
Until now 10,000 kwacha was worth roughly two dollars.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe decision to rebase was further premised on government\u2019s conviction to restore the intrinsic value of our currency as a medium of exchange, by bringing normalcy to the numeration of the local currency,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The new currency will run side by side with old Kwacha notes until June 30, 2012.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlthough the old currency will cease to be legal tender on 30 June, it will be available for exchange at the Bank of Zambia, commercial banks for a period of 36 months until 31 December 2015,\u201d said Chikwanda.<\/p>\n
\u201cI therefore urge the public not to panic as they change their old currency for the rebased currency,\u201d Chikwanda said.<\/p>\n
