{"id":4886,"date":"2012-12-30T11:05:11","date_gmt":"2012-12-30T11:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/un-reviews-monusco-s-role-in-dr-congo\/"},"modified":"2012-12-30T11:03:58","modified_gmt":"2012-12-30T11:03:58","slug":"un-reviews-monusco-s-role-in-dr-congo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/un-reviews-monusco-s-role-in-dr-congo\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Reviews Monusco\u2019s Role in DR Congo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{{The UN has begun reviewing the mix of troops under its heavily-criticised peace-keeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a senior official has said.}}<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ban Ki-moon\u2019s deputy spokesperson, Mr Eduardo del Buey, told this newspaper by email that the Security Council has formally asked the Secretary-General to provide alternatives on troop composition, and possible redeployments, to strengthen MONUSCO\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United Nations Security Council has requested the Secretary-General to report on options and their implications for the possible redeployments, in consultation with troop and police-contributing countries of Monusco contingents,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>{{Most expensive}}<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in DRC, better known by the acronym Monusco, is a 19,154-strong force deployed primarily to protect civilians in eastern DR Congo that is threatened by a plethora of hazardous rebel outfits and other armed gangs. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the world\u2019s largest, and with a $1.4 billion annual budget, the most expensive peace operation running.<\/p>\n<p>Following the flare up in violence from April, resulting in M23 rebels\u2019 brief capture of Goma City in November, regional leaders \u2013 particularly Presidents Museveni and his Tanzanian counterpart Jakaya Kikwete &#8211;
