{"id":4807,"date":"2012-12-23T06:55:43","date_gmt":"2012-12-23T06:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/uganda-is-now-landmine-free\/"},"modified":"2012-12-23T06:54:54","modified_gmt":"2012-12-23T06:54:54","slug":"uganda-is-now-landmine-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/uganda-is-now-landmine-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Uganda is Now Landmine Free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Uganda government has declared that the East African country is now free of Landmines.<\/p>\n<p>The Announcement was made by the country&#8217;s State Minister for Relief and Disaster Preparedness, Musa Ecweru.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Government was making arrangements to rehabilitate and compensate victims of landmines planted during insurgencies,&#8221; Ecweru said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the landmine clearing exercise that was started in 2006 by the Uganda Mine Action Unit, 46 mine areas in northern Uganda, West Nile and Ruwenzori sub-regions were cleared and are now free of mines,\u201dMr Ecweru said.<\/p>\n<p>He said 1,617, 156 square metres of area has already been released and is free for cultivation.<\/p>\n<p>Uganda signed the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention in 1997 through which it was supposed to clear all landmines accumulated during the years of conflict between the army and insurgents in northern and western Uganda.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Uganda government has declared that the East African country is now free of Landmines.
