Of these to be planted in schools, the majority will be fruit trees.

On Tuesday 22nd November 2022, the exercise started at Ecole Belge de Kigali. The Mayor of Kigali City, Pudence Rubingisa has said that more than 21,000 trees are set to be planted this year.

“We have started a tree planting exercise as part of annual initiative to plant trees. We found it necessary to begin with schools so that children can grow knowing what environment preservation is about, how to plant trees and their significance,” he said.

Rubingisa said that 400,000 trees are to be planted in Kigali as sensitization is ongoing to encourage schools to plant as many as possible trees with special attention on fruit trees to address malnutrition.

A total of 9685 trees are expected to be planted in Nyarugenge District, 7020 in Gasabo while over 4,000 are to be planted in Kicukiro.

The Minister of Environment, Dr. Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya has said that trees will be planted in different places including schools to bring environment preservation to the attention of younger generation.

“Schools are among targeted places to be planted with trees. A message sent through children is delivered to the recipient. These children are government’s messengers to their parents. Helping children to plant trees is about nurturing their future. A tree is life and the future of Rwanda. It becomes more meaningful to involve children in making the world a better place to live in,” she said.

With full participation of Rwandans, Dr. Mujawamariya has revealed that the target of planting 36 million trees might be surpassed to reach 40 million.

She requested Rwandans to actively plant trees at home, along roads, in church premises, and farmlands among others.

The Headmaster of Ecole Belge de Kigali, Pierre Dulieu said that instilling the culture of planting trees among children helps them prepare for their future and attach great relevance to their importance.

Jean Michel Swalens, an official from Belgian embassy in Rwanda observed that Rwanda’s campaign to plan trees will significantly contribute to climate change mitigation.

<img decoding="async" src="https://en-images.igihe.com/jpg/5-106.jpg" alt="The Mayor of Kigali City,
