This is part of the efforts to curb fatalities on road caused by drunk driving.<\/p>\n

In the latest operations conducted between September 3rd and 7th in City of Kigali, the traffic and road safety department arrested 48 people, who were either driving or riding while drunk.<\/p>\n

A motorist is considered drunk when the blood alcoholic content is above 0.8 millilitres.<\/p>\n

“I had taken three bottles of beer; that I cannot deny,” said Jean Marie Vianney Nzitonda, one of the arrested taxi-moto operators.<\/p>\n

Another arrested driver, Eric Muhawenimana said that he had taken alcohol when he was involved in a road crash on September 6, with a taxi-moto operator.<\/p>\n

“When Police officers tested me, the breathalyzer indicated that my drunkenness was at 2 millilitres,” said Muhawenimana.<\/p>\n

At least 88 motorists have been arrested in Kigali since the beginning of this month for driving while drunk.<\/p>\n

RNP Deputy spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Africa Apollo Sendahangarwa said that some motorists do not consider the impact of alcohol on road accidents and related deaths.<\/p>\n

“The operations are meant to save lives, either of the drunk motorist or other road users. It is also another method of sending a message on dangers of drunk-driving because these people are also educated on dangers that are likely to result from their reckless practices on road,” CSP Africa said.<\/p>\n

He urged drivers to put safety first and act responsibly on road adding that operations against impaired driving will continue to ensure safer roads for all.<\/p>\n
