{"id":43067,"date":"2021-03-12T10:38:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-12T10:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/libyan-soldiers-free-120-migrants-from-captors\/"},"modified":"2021-03-12T10:37:42","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T10:37:42","slug":"libyan-soldiers-free-120-migrants-from-captors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/libyan-soldiers-free-120-migrants-from-captors\/","title":{"rendered":"Libyan soldiers free 120 migrants from captors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The migrants, mostly Egyptians, were released after &#8220;a morning raid on the dens of human traffickers&#8221;, the elite 444th combat brigade said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Their captors had subjected them to &#8220;torture and extortion&#8221;, it added, citing testimonies from those released.<\/p>\n<p>Abuse of migrants is widespread in Libya, where they have been exploited in the chaos which has reigned since the 2011 ousting of dictator Moamer Kadhafi.<\/p>\n<p>The brigade also carried out an operation against smugglers last week in Bani Walid, a centre for human trafficking on the edge of the desert about 170 kilometres southeast of Tripoli.<\/p>\n<p>Six hideouts were discovered in that operation and 70 would-be migrants of different nationalities were released, it said, adding that &#8220;one of the country&#8217;s most notorious traffickers was detained along with other foreign criminals who were kidnapping, killing and torturing their victims&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people have crossed into Libya from neighbouring countries in recent years and travelled onwards to the Mediterranean coast, where human traffickers operate boats bound for Europe.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-38063 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/libya-migrants.jpg\" alt=\"Rescued migrants sit aboard a Libyan coastguard vessel arriving at the capital Tripoli&#039;s naval base on February 28, 2021.
