{"id":41425,"date":"2020-05-23T17:24:44","date_gmt":"2020-05-23T17:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/govt-funding-of-rwandair-increases-to-rwf145-1bn\/"},"modified":"2020-05-27T19:16:00","modified_gmt":"2020-05-27T19:16:00","slug":"govt-funding-of-rwandair-increases-to-rwf145-1bn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/govt-funding-of-rwandair-increases-to-rwf145-1bn\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt. funding of RwandAir increases to Rwf145.1bn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The CEO of the airline Yvonne Makolo said that the airline will direct the funds in sustaining operations and expanding the airline as flights resume after a lull occasioned by coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe are looking at both, sustaining operations and expanding the airline but for now we are waiting to see if skies will reopen and we resume flying,\u201d She said. <\/p>\n<p>RwandAir grounded flights as part of the measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 and only recently launched cargo flights in the region and beyond as an alternative as passenger flights remain suspended.<\/p>\n<p> Last month, RwandAir announced that they would cut employees\u2019 salaries by between 8 percent and 65 percent while the top management team forfeited their salaries. Makolo said the airline has not laid off any staff. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not laid off any staff and we don\u2019t hope to do so,\u201d Makolo said, adding however that fully restoring operation will depend on the subsiding of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p> RwandAir recently resumed cargo flights to and from Guangzhou, China, flights from Mwanza, Tanzania, to Brussels as well as London in a bid to rake in revenue from the growing demand of goods.<\/p>\n<p> Makolo said the plan is working out well with the demand for cargo shipment on the increase as many countries continue to impose travel restrictions to contain the spread of Coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>President Paul Kagame said the government would consider investing more money in the airline to sustain its operations last month.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-35701 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/arton134474-ff9f9.jpg\" alt=\"The CEO of the airline Yvonne Makolo said that the airline will direct the funds in sustaining operations and expanding the airline\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RwandAir will get a financial  boost from the government of Rwanda, Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Uzziel Ndagijimana has said.
