Unathi Batyashe-Fillis, a spokeswoman for the Airports Company South Africa, said Tuesday that the aircraft attempted to take off from O.R. Tambo International Airport outside of Johannesburg. Batyashe-Fillis said the pilot aborted the takeoff after noticing the wheel on fire.<\/p>\n
Batyashe-Fillis says 126 people were aboard the aircraft, though she didn’t know what type of plane was involved. She said the plane was a chartered aircraft flown by Global Aviation, a private company based in South Africa that flies DC-9s, DC-10s and MD-82s.<\/p>\n
