{"id":40435,"date":"2019-12-02T09:54:58","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T09:54:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/first-lady-attends-car-free-day-ahead-of-icasa\/"},"modified":"2019-12-04T17:28:38","modified_gmt":"2019-12-04T17:28:38","slug":"first-lady-attends-car-free-day-ahead-of-icasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/first-lady-attends-car-free-day-ahead-of-icasa\/","title":{"rendered":"First Lady attends Car Free Day ahead of ICASA meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The activity started at Remera Stade Amahoro and ended at Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA)on Sunday, 1st December, 2019<\/p>\n<p>ICASA conference will take place at the Kigali Convention Center from the 2nd to the 7th December, 2019 and will attract more than 10,000 participants. It will focus on talks about the AIDS epidemic, non-communicable diseases (NCDs)and other sexually transmitted diseases in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>This conference will also gather researchers, students, lecturers, doctors, pharmacists and heads of states from more than 150 countries around the world. It is a premier gathering for all working in the field of HIV, as well as leaders, people living with HIV and others committed to ending the epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>This particular Car Free Day was dedicated on raising awareness about non-communicable diseases and HIV AIDS in line with World AIDS day that was celebrated on December, 1st, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Her Excellency Jeannette Kagame was accompanied by government officials including the Minister of Sports, Aurore Mimosa Munyangaju, the Minister of Health, Dr. Diane Gashumba, Mbabazi Rosemary, Kigali City Mayor and Rubingisa Prudence among others.<\/p>\n<p>Among the guests who attended this sports event were Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization since 2017 and the deputy director of UNAIDS, Shannon Hader. <\/p>\n<p>Her Excellency Jeannette Kagame last attended the Car Free Day on the 17th November, 2019 along Imbuto Foundation staff where the agenda of the day was raising awareness about diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Car Free Day was launched in May, 2016 with the aim of sensitizing Kigali residents to adopt the good culture of sports and exercising and also encouraging them to test for HIV AIDS and non-communicable diseases. It is done on every first and third Sunday of the month.<\/p>\n<p>Research has shown that the number of people who are infected by HIV in Rwanda has remarkably reduced over the years from more than 10,000 new infections in 2014 to 5400 in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda continues to make strides in fighting against the HIV epidemic and has reached the UNAIDS goal of providing easy access to medication for HIV positive people by 2020. This goal also states that by 2020, 90% of people infected with HIV will be aware of their status and that there will a reduction in new HIV infections by 90%. <\/p>\n<p>UNAIDS research shows that there are around 39 million HIV positive people around the world. 79% of HIV positive people know their status, 3 in 5 people use antiretroviral drugs to counter the disease while 53% of HIV positive
