{"id":40101,"date":"2019-09-30T16:05:56","date_gmt":"2019-09-30T16:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/shyaka-calls-for-united-efforts-to-end-child\/"},"modified":"2019-10-02T12:32:13","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T12:32:13","slug":"shyaka-calls-for-united-efforts-to-end-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/shyaka-calls-for-united-efforts-to-end-child\/","title":{"rendered":"Shyaka calls for united efforts to end child abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The minister revealed this on Friday 27th September 2019 during the opening of a dialogue on strengthening investigations and stopping child abuse organized by Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) and partners.  <\/p>\n<p>The dialogue was organized in partnership with World Vision- a Christian organization working to create lasting positive transformations among children, families and vulnerable communities living in poverty.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe have the vision of building national development in this country rooted in safe families, capable Rwandans and security for both people and goods. Yet these days, we find domestic conflicts, children abuse, defilement and teen pregnancies on raise,\u201d Minister Shyaka said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an obstacle to the government family development policy and vision. We have come here today to build partnerships that will propel us into tackling these crimes perpetrated against children and teenagers,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>With reference to the Rwanda Demographic Health Survey (RDHS) 2014-2015, a large number of the youth (including those still enrolled in school) are already engaging in sexual relationships putting them at the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and unexpected pregnancies among others.<\/p>\n<p>Official government figures indicate that teenage pregnancy rate increased from 6.1 per cent in 2010 to 7.3 per cent in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>These are some of the cases whereby relevant institutions with investigation under their attributions have to deal with.  <\/p>\n<p>RIB received 2091 cases of child abuse in 2016\/17,  a number that increased to 3060 in 2017\/18 and 3512 cases in 2018\/19, as per RIB reports.  <\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General of Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), Jeannot Ruhunga, said that child abuse is taking another level mostly because it is done secretly.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, noted that strict measures are being implemented to address it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren are the future of Rwanda. The future will depend on how we treat them today.
