{"id":40047,"date":"2019-09-19T11:30:46","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T11:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/rwanda-s-prospects-for-nuclear-research-centre\/"},"modified":"2019-09-19T11:28:45","modified_gmt":"2019-09-19T11:28:45","slug":"rwanda-s-prospects-for-nuclear-research-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/rwanda-s-prospects-for-nuclear-research-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda\u2019s prospects for nuclear research centre brighter as Russia launches power unit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rwanda is also set to tap from the opportunities presented by the said technology to meet part of its power needs in the next five years.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRwanda envisions having a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology in the nearest future,\u201d says Robert Nyamvumba, the Energy Division Manager at the Ministry of Infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>ROSATOM is one of the world\u2019s most experienced providers of nuclear energy services.<\/p>\n<p>Once commissioned, it will become the world\u2019s first operational nuclear power plant based on small modular reactors (SMRs) technology; and a \u2018working prototype\u2019 for a reliable source of low-carbon energy supply in remote areas. <\/p>\n<p>During its launch, Rosatom\u2019s CEO Alexey Likhachev said: \u201cIt\u2019s maybe one small step for sustainable development in the Arctic, but it\u2019s a giant leap for the decarbonization of remote off-grid areas, and a watershed in the development of small modular nuclear power plants in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The project has been welcomed by scientists, nuclear energy experts, and environmentalists across the world. <\/p>\n<p>Last year, Rwanda signed with Russia a cooperation agreement on the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Talks are now focused on how both soft and physical infrastructures can be set up to pave way for nuclear energy development so it can be used in different areas such as agriculture, medicine, education, and electricity generation.<\/p>\n<p>The official said that cooperation with ROSATOM will see Rwanda and Russia establish study programs that will help Rwandans acquire advanced knowledge in nuclear sciences, with the University of Rwanda training students from the undergrad level, and master\u2019s level, to PhDs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-32312 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/the_floating_power_unit_akademik_lomonosov.jpg\" alt=\"ROSATOM is one of the world\u2019s most experienced providers of nuclear energy services.\" \/><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-32313 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/the_floating_power_unit_akademik_lomonosov_docking.jpg\" alt=\"Rwanda\u2019s prospects for nuclear research centre brighter as Russia launches power unit\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Rwanda considers setting up a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology (CNST) in the next five years with the support of Russia, the prospects have got brighter as Russia\u2019s State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) rolled out a floating power unit, Akademik Lomonosov, at the port of its permanent location in Pevek, Chukotka, in Russia&#8217;s the Far East.
