{"id":39781,"date":"2019-08-03T15:15:50","date_gmt":"2019-08-03T15:15:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/rubavu-commits-to-elimination-of-stunting-among\/"},"modified":"2019-08-05T15:30:27","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T15:30:27","slug":"rubavu-commits-to-elimination-of-stunting-among","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/rubavu-commits-to-elimination-of-stunting-among\/","title":{"rendered":"Rubavu commits to elimination of stunting among children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sun Alliance is a coalition of civil society organizations known for scaling up proper nutrition practices. <\/p>\n<p>The commitment was expressed during a consultative meeting that brought together grassroots leaders and district officials, development partners, churches and health institutions.  <\/p>\n<p>The secretary of Rubavu district advisory committee, Muruta Bertilde said local authorities reset to intensify nutrition awareness campaigns, mobilizing parents to pay much attention to children\u2019s feeding regimes. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe are going to strengthen measures against stunting in collaboration with sector officials. Our district is not poor but parents don\u2019t dedicate enough time to take care of their children. The next step is to intensify mobilization, encouraging parents to take care of their children in collaboration with the district advisory committee,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>Rubavu district vice mayor for social affairs, Uwampayizina Marie Grace said the number of children with stunting problems is a matter of mindsets because the district has enough food. <\/p>\n<p>Among measures to be adopted, she highlighted, include training parents to prepare a balanced diet. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are among 13 districts with a high rate of children faced with stunting. We have observed that the issue emanates from parents not taking care of children efficiently, family disputes and mindsets because some parents don\u2019t prepare a balanced diet yet they have enough food,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>The rate of children with stunting problems in Rubavu stood at 48% in 2018 from 46% in 2016. <\/p>\n<p>The Executive Director of SUN Alliance Rwanda, Venuste Muhamyankaka said they have committed to partner with Rubavu district following the growing number of malnourished children. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cEvery stakeholder including the health sector, religions and have pledged their contribution while the district committed to incorporate the fight against stunting among performance contracts following the consultative meeting. <\/p>\n<p>The district has also committed to inspect grass-root leadership to make timely reports, faith-based organizations requested for the training of clerics and enhance implementation of the programs among followers. <\/p>\n<p>The advisory committee also pledged to increase the budget allocated to the fight against malnutrition while our association will support these efforts raising funds,\u201d he explained.   <\/p>\n<p>Districts reported to have serious problems of stunting include Nyabihu with approximately 50%, Nyaruguru with 41.7%, Muhanga with 41.6% and Ruhango with 41.1%.<\/p>\n<figure
