{"id":39429,"date":"2019-05-31T15:01:45","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T15:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/kagame-in-kinshasa-for-tshisekedi-funeral\/"},"modified":"2019-06-04T15:39:58","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T15:39:58","slug":"kagame-in-kinshasa-for-tshisekedi-funeral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/kagame-in-kinshasa-for-tshisekedi-funeral\/","title":{"rendered":"Kagame in Kinshasa for Tshisekedi funeral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Six heads of state are expected to attend the ceremony including; of Guinea, Alpha Cond\u00e9, Faure Gnassingbe of Togo, Joao Louren\u00e7o of Angola, Edgar Lungu of Zambi, Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo-Brazzaville.<\/p>\n<p>President Kagame visits DRC following the visit of his counterpart Tshisekedi to Rwanda attending Africa CEO Forum.<\/p>\n<p>In a press conference concluding the forum, President Kagame and Felix Tshisekedi committed to strengthening cooperation to boost relationships between both countries and advancing the development of citizens on both sides.<\/p>\n<p>The body of longtime Congolese opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi arrived Thursday evening in Kinshasa as his son Felix, now the nation\u2019s president waited at the airport.<\/p>\n<p>The younger Tshisekedi then accompanied the body during a formal procession that stopped at his home and at the headquarters of Tshisekedi\u2019s political party, the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), where party supporters waited to pay their respects. .<\/p>\n<p>The slow journey through the streets marked the end of a long battle to repatriate the remains of Tshisekedi, who was 84 when he died in Brussels, Belgium, in February 2017. <\/p>\n<p>His death came at the height of tensions between former president Joseph Kabila and the Congolese opposition, particularly the UDPS; the first attempt to bring his body home was in March 2017 but each time the plans were frustrated by conflicts over the details of his repatriation, funeral and burial.<\/p>\n<p>That changed after Felix Tshisekedi was inaugurated earlier this year, and the family was greeted with a hero\u2019s welcome from the Congolese people.<\/p>\n<p>The funeral procession was largely peaceful, although a local media outlet reported tear gas was used to break up a crowd of UDPS supporters who were upset that they could not accompany the body to its destination at a Kinshasa hospital.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s there that the body will remain until Friday morning when the family will depart for Martyrs Stadium, where memorial services open to the public will be held.
