{"id":38440,"date":"2018-11-01T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/first-lady-joins-pap-to-support-women-fight\/"},"modified":"2018-11-04T22:13:10","modified_gmt":"2018-11-04T22:13:10","slug":"first-lady-joins-pap-to-support-women-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/first-lady-joins-pap-to-support-women-fight\/","title":{"rendered":"First Lady joins PAP to support women fight against corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is in line with the theme of the 11th Pan-African Parliament Conference on Women\u2019s Rights under the theme: \u201cPan-African Parliament fights against corruption\u201d being hosted in Kigali, Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>The two-day conference scheduled to conclude on November 2, is being held alongside the 1st Ordinary Session of the 5th Parliament currently under-way in the capital Kigali.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering her keynote address at the conference, Mrs. Kagame emphasized that women in leadership play a critical role in curbing corruption and securing the future of African economies by ensuring accountable governance and service delivery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral studies suggest that women are less corrupt and that companies with a higher number of women in decision-making perform better in terms of resource management and maintaining zero-tolerance level for corruption,\u201d she underscored.<\/p>\n<p>She added that; \u201cTherefore, the priority must be to strengthen legal and institutional frameworks and mechanisms that reinforce accountability and ensure that principles of equity and equality are consistently addressed in all areas of our public and private spheres.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hon. Roger Nkodo Dang, President of the Pan-African Parliament, spoke of women\u2019s vulnerability to specific types of corruption due to their social, political and economic roles adding that there was a need for the establishment of prudent mechanisms that involve women in uprooting corruption from African societies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis conference seeks to draw the attention of women legislators to the existing gaps between policy frameworks, gender policies, anti-corruption strategies, and actions,\u201d said Hon. Dang \u2018<\/p>\n<p>Hon. Jamila Ksiksi Debbech, Chairperson of the PAP Women&#8217;s Caucus, welcomed the participation of the First Lady of Rwanda, who was recently awarded the African Women of Excellence Awards (AWEA) for her outstanding work on empowering women and her overall contribution to Africa&#8217;s development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is a proven champion for women empowerment and the emancipation of Africa. Her contribution will be significant in advancing women\u2019s agenda at this year\u2019s conference; particularly in the consolidation of gains and achievements from women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Pan-African Parliament has been holding its Conference on Women\u2019s Rights since 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The event has become an efficient platform to promote gender-balance, review and debate women\u2019s issues in Africa and ensure efficient monitoring of gender policies on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>In line with the African Union theme for 2018; \u201cWinning the fight against corruption: a sustainable path to Africa\u2019s transformation,\u201d the annual Conference on Women\u2019s Rights focuses on the role of parliamentarians in combating corruption through legislation enforcement; particularly those dealing with the effect of corruption on women and development in Africa.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-27526 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/photo1-7-ffa5f.jpg\" alt=\"Rwanda&#039;s First Lady Mrs. Jeannette Kagame joined Pan-African Parliament Members to call for increased women role in fighting against corruption on the continent\" \/><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-27528 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/photo5-6-19e70.jpg\" alt=\"The President of the Pan-African Parliament, Hon.
