Kanuma was convicted of tax evasion and counterfeit in the tender he won at Rwanda Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (RDRC). <\/p>\n

The Rwanda Correctional Services (RCS) Spokesperson, CIP Hillary Sengabo told IGIHE on Friday that Kanuma was released on December 26th2017 after completing his sentence.<\/p>\n

The court decision was read on 26th October 2017 by Gasabo Intermediate court and Kanuma was sentenced to one year in jail and a fine of Rwf1 million.<\/p>\n

Kanuma, 48, had been arrested in the night of 31st December 2016.<\/p>\n

During the hearing, the prosecution alleged that, in the process of bidding for a tender in RDRC, Kanuma falsified the salaries of his employees so that he would meet tender requirements.<\/p>\n

He later won the Rwf44 million tender without informing his employees.<\/p>\n

According to a statement submitted by The Rwanda Focus former employees to prosecution, Kanuma impersonated and forged the signature of his former accountant, Annet Bamurange, to win the tender.<\/p>\n

Theophile Harushyamagara, former journalist with The Rwanda Focus said that he realised that Kanuma had released a Rwf500,000 cheque in his name yet he used to pay him Rwf200,000 monthly.<\/p>\n

Another journalist Stevenson Mugisha confirmed that Kanuma released a Rwf 500,000 cheque in his name yet he received Rwf300 000 only.<\/p>\n

It was later established among employees that Kanuma submitted false information to RDRC to win the tender. The forgery was later discovered by RDRC which filed a case for the court of law.<\/p>\n

Regarding the case of tax fraud, prosecution claimed that Kanuma accepted tax arrears of Rwf 65, 256, 589 which he attributed to poor performance of the country’s media industry.<\/p>\n
