{"id":36608,"date":"2017-12-26T11:04:26","date_gmt":"2017-12-26T11:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/president-kabila-s-house-burnt-down\/"},"modified":"2017-12-26T19:25:58","modified_gmt":"2017-12-26T19:25:58","slug":"president-kabila-s-house-burnt-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/president-kabila-s-house-burnt-down\/","title":{"rendered":"President Kabila\u2019s House Burnt Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So-called Mai-Mai armed groups were probably trying to steal goods from the building in Musienene, North Kivu province in the country\u2019s troubled east, according to a military official.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe residence of the head of state in Musienene has been targeted in an attack from 03:00 and then burned by the Mai-Mai,\u201d the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attackers ransacked everything before setting the house and some vehicles on fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kabila spends most of his time in the capital, Kinshasa, but is believed to have several homes across the country, including a farm.<\/p>\n<p>Musienene regularly sees protests against Kabila\u2019s extended time in power and demonstrations over insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>He has managed to cling to power despite his second and final term as president officially ending in December 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Elections to replace him never took place and a deal was eventually brokered that enabled Kabila to stay in office until a vote that was due to be held in 2017.
