{"id":36305,"date":"2017-11-19T16:06:51","date_gmt":"2017-11-19T16:06:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/mugabe-given-until-noon-monday-to-quit-as\/"},"modified":"2017-11-19T16:05:46","modified_gmt":"2017-11-19T16:05:46","slug":"mugabe-given-until-noon-monday-to-quit-as","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/mugabe-given-until-noon-monday-to-quit-as\/","title":{"rendered":"Mugabe given until noon Monday to quit as President of Zimbabwe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mugabe, the only leader Zimbabwe has known since independence from Britain in 1980, was replaced by Emmerson Mnangagwa, the deputy he sacked this month, a senior party official told a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>In scenes unthinkable just a week ago, the announcement was met by cheers from the 200 ZANU-PF delegates packed into the party\u2019s Harare headquarters to seal the fate of Mugabe, whose support has crumbled in the four days since the army seized power.<\/p>\n<p>Mugabe\u2019s 52-year-old wife Grace, who had harbored ambitions of succeeding her husband, was also expelled from the party, along with at least three cabinet ministers who had formed the backbone of her \u2018G40\u2019 political faction.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before the meeting, war veterans\u2019 leader Chris Mutsvangwa said Mugabe was running out of time to negotiate his departure and should leave the country while he could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s trying to bargain for a dignified exit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He then followed up with threat to unleash the mob onto Mugabe if refused to go, telling reporters: \u201cWe will bring back the crowds and they will do their business,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moments after the vote was taken to remove Mugabe, the delegate hall erupted in applause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president is gone.
