{"id":36266,"date":"2017-11-15T16:11:26","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T16:11:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/road-accidents-claim-160-lives-in-three-months\/"},"modified":"2017-11-15T16:11:18","modified_gmt":"2017-11-15T16:11:18","slug":"road-accidents-claim-160-lives-in-three-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/road-accidents-claim-160-lives-in-three-months\/","title":{"rendered":"Road accidents claim 160 lives in three months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The State Minister for Transport in MININFRA, Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye gave the statistics yesterday while launching the road safety campaign in Musanze District.<\/p>\n<p>Uwihanganye urged all road users to take it as their responsibility to make roads safer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatistics show that 162 people have died as a result of road accidents that happened between August and October, a total of 250 were injured, some of them sustaining serious injuries,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Based on statistics, he said a total of 60 people die of accidents monthly or two perish on a daily basis. <\/p>\n<p>He said that it is shocking to hear such avoidable deaths occurring and called everyone\u2019s participation in preventing accidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is one thing to have good roads but it is another thing to make them safe. We are not constructing roads to claim our people\u2019s lives; we are constructing roads to improve the livelihood of the people,\u201d Uwihanganye added.<\/p>\n<p>Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel Gasana said that it is disheartening to have more than 100 deaths in three months at the hands of accidents.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cLosing lives of more than 100 people in a single quarter, is unbearable. No disease is worse than this,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Gasana said that they have increased deployment of traffic police officers on the road to ensure road safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we have put up measures, we still need to enhance our cooperation in ending accidents.
