{"id":34305,"date":"2017-05-02T16:39:35","date_gmt":"2017-05-02T16:39:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/nigeria-s-president-buhari-urged-to-take-medical\/"},"modified":"2017-05-02T16:39:32","modified_gmt":"2017-05-02T16:39:32","slug":"nigeria-s-president-buhari-urged-to-take-medical","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/nigeria-s-president-buhari-urged-to-take-medical\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria&#8217;s President Buhari urged to take medical leave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{A group of prominent Nigerians has called on President Muhammadu Buhari, 74, to take medical leave, amid growing concern about his health.}<\/p>\n<p>There was an &#8220;apparent deterioration&#8221; in his health following his failure to attend the last two cabinet meetings, the group said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Buhari took about seven weeks of medical leave in January, and flew to the UK for treatment.<\/p>\n<p>When he returned home in March, he said he had never been so ill in his life.<br \/>\nMr Buhari has not disclosed his illness, but hinted that he had had a blood transfusion.<\/p>\n<p>The president had not been seen in public for the last week, and his absence from the cabinet meetings, as well as the weekly Friday Muslim prayers, &#8220;has fuelled further speculation and rumours&#8221; about his medical condition, the group of 13 Nigerians said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The group included some of the Nigeria&#8217;s most influential civil society figures, including lawyer Femi Falana, political analyst Jibrin Ibrahim, and Transparency International Nigeria head Anwal Musa Rafsanjani.<\/p>\n<p>The 13 said they felt &#8220;compelled&#8221; to ask Mr Buhari &#8220;to heed the advice of his personal physicians by taking a rest to attend to his health without any further delay&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Buhari&#8217;s aides have not yet commented on the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Last week presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said Mr Buhari was &#8220;taking things slowly, as he fully recovers from the long period of treatment&#8221; in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>{{Buhari&#8217;s unhealthy start to 2017}}<\/p>\n<p>19 January: Leaves for UK on &#8220;medical vacation&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>5 February: Asks parliament to extend medical leave<\/p>\n<p>10 March: Returns home but does not resume work immediately<\/p>\n<p>26 April: Misses second cabinet meeting and is &#8220;working from home&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>28 April: Misses Friday prayers<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-19744 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/_93993512_buhariafa.jpg\" alt=\"President Muhammadu Buhari has been undergoing medical tests in the UK\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Source:BBC <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{A group of prominent Nigerians has called on President Muhammadu Buhari, 74, to take medical leave, amid growing concern about his health.} There was an &#8220;apparent deterioration&#8221; in his health following his failure to attend the last two cabinet meetings, the group said.
