{"id":34198,"date":"2017-04-27T08:42:34","date_gmt":"2017-04-27T08:42:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/wfp-says-food-shipment-blocked-by-burundi-has\/"},"modified":"2017-04-27T08:42:16","modified_gmt":"2017-04-27T08:42:16","slug":"wfp-says-food-shipment-blocked-by-burundi-has","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wfp-says-food-shipment-blocked-by-burundi-has\/","title":{"rendered":"WFP says food shipment blocked by Burundi has turned back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{The U.N.\u2019s World Food Program says a convoy of food aid blocked from entering Burundi has returned to Rwanda.}<\/p>\n<p>Peter Smerdon, a WFP official in East Africa, said Wednesday that authorities in Burundi prevented the convoy from entering the country because of \u201csecurity issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the food was a regular shipment of WFP aid from Rwanda into Burundi, where it would have fed about 112,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>WFP says more than half of Burundians are chronically malnourished.<\/p>\n<p>The East African country has seen almost two years of deadly political violence over President Pierre Nkurunziza\u2019s stay in power.<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda and Burundi have seen a rise in tensions, with Burundi\u2019s government claiming that rebel forces have been trained and armed in Rwanda.
