{"id":33184,"date":"2017-03-14T10:27:40","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T10:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/somali-pirates-suspected-of-first-ship-hijacking\/"},"modified":"2017-03-14T10:27:34","modified_gmt":"2017-03-14T10:27:34","slug":"somali-pirates-suspected-of-first-ship-hijacking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/somali-pirates-suspected-of-first-ship-hijacking\/","title":{"rendered":"Somali pirates suspected of first ship hijacking since 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{A freight ship has been hijacked off the coast of Somalia, reports say.}<\/p>\n<p>A number of suspected pirates boarded the Sri Lankan-flagged vessel off the country&#8217;s northern coast on Monday, residents and officials say.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the European Union Naval Force, which runs anti-piracy operations in the area, said it was too early to confirm pirate involvement.<\/p>\n<p>If confirmed, it would be the first hijacking of a commercial ship by Somali pirates since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The EU Naval Force told the BBC: &#8220;We became aware of this yesterday evening [Monday], and a light aircraft has been sent at first light today to investigate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>John Steed of the aid group Oceans Beyond Piracy, speaking to Reuters news agency, said, &#8220;The ship reported it was being followed by two skiffs yesterday afternoon.
