{"id":32431,"date":"2017-02-09T01:21:22","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T01:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/equatorial-guinea-government-moves-to-new-city-in\/"},"modified":"2017-02-09T01:21:13","modified_gmt":"2017-02-09T01:21:13","slug":"equatorial-guinea-government-moves-to-new-city-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/equatorial-guinea-government-moves-to-new-city-in\/","title":{"rendered":"Equatorial Guinea government moves to new city in rainforest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{The government of Equatorial Guinea has moved its headquarters from the coastal capital of Malabo to an unfinished city deep in the rainforest.}<\/p>\n<p>President Teodoro Obiang Nguema aims to use the country&#8217;s oil wealth to make Djibloho a &#8220;city of the future&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Security, and safety from any attempt to overthrow the government was also a factor in the move.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that MPs will stay there initially for three months.<\/p>\n<p>Chairing his first meeting in Djibloho, also known as Oyala, Prime Minister Francisco Pascual Obama Asue warned MPs not to treat the move as a holiday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your relocation here does not mean that you are engaging in tourism,&#8221; said Mr Obama Asue.<\/p>\n<p>{{A new city rises from the jungle}}<\/p>\n<p>Djibloho is surrounded by several national parks and is not far from the eastern border with Gabon.<\/p>\n<p>The city, which has been several years in the making, includes a five-star hotel, a championship golf course, a conference centre and a university.<\/p>\n<p>When the project was first announced, President Obiang said security was also a reason for moving the capital.<\/p>\n<p>He has been the target of attempted coups in the past, most famously by the British mercenary Simon Mann in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Obiang said rebels had plotted a seaborne assault on his palace in the current capital, Malabo.<\/p>\n<p>Although Equatorial Guinea is Africa&#8217;s third biggest oil producer, more than half the population lives below the poverty line.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-18116 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/_94230689_university_library624.jpg\" alt=\"The city will feature a new international university\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Source:BBC <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{The government of Equatorial Guinea has moved its headquarters from the coastal capital of Malabo to an unfinished city deep in the rainforest.} President Teodoro Obiang Nguema aims to use the country&#8217;s oil wealth to make Djibloho a &#8220;city of the future&#8221;.
